What is filling? How does that even help?

A filling is a way to restore any tooth that is damaged by decay back to its normal shape and functionality. This is a routine practice for dentistry as there are far many cases which require fillings. When a dentist gives you a filling, he/she first removes the decays present on the tooth, cleans the affected area, and then fills the cleaned-out cavity with a filling material, usually white or silver in color.

Bacteria can enter a tooth through gaps or voids and take up any space to decay the tooth. By removing these spaces not only does the bacteria are prevented from entering, but a filling also helps prevent further decay. Normally, the materials used for fillings include gold, porcelain, a composite resin (colored like the tooth), and an amalgam (an alloy of mercury, silver, copper, and tin). A dentist will ensure that all these are used in accordance with the requirement or the scale and magnitude of the problem itself. Dentistry visits can further help you fend off any post-filing issues and can assure the strength of the newly-filled tooth by providing the right medicines or advising to omit certain types of intake (solid or liquid) which may harm the teeth in general.

Most of the procedure is painless and does not pose any threat at all. These are routine exercises for dentists who are extremely qualified and are the only ones who can provide such services using their expertise, knowledge and vast experience.

The next time you visit your dentist, be sure to find out more about the services they offer. A thorough check-up might do you better as there may be issues building up without providing any symptoms to you. It is best to know any possibilities in advance so you and your dentist can take preventive measures.
